The Department of Agriculture was started on May 27, 1908 in Travancore State. More than 50 percent of the state's population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. The main objective of the Department of Agriculture is to devise and implement many projects to make comprehensive progress in the agricultural sector of Kerala. The Department of Agriculture was established on 27th May 1908 (14th A.D. 1083 AD) during the reign of Sri Moolam Thidanal, the Maharaja of Travancore. Dr. obtained a degree in agricultural science from the University of Edinburgh, Europe, and a doctorate from the University of Lapsingam. N Kunjanpillai was appointed as the first director of the Department of Agriculture.

He was in charge of the Agricultural Demonstration Farms and Animal Husbandry in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. Later more farms, laboratories, and Cattle breeding units were also established. At that time, the Agriculture Department was functioning as a part of the Land Revenue Department. Staffing was implemented in 1924 with one agricultural inspector in each taluk, two field assistants, and one officer at the district level
