The fates of the Rostovs, the Bolkonskys, Pierre, Natasha, and Andrei are closely linked to the national history which is being played out parallel to their lives. In a work of unparalleled imaginative power, balls, and soirees are interspersed with war councils and the plotting of generals and statesmen. Scenes of violence and everyday passions are juxtaposed with scenes of violent battles.
